Colombia – salt cathedral north of Bogotá

Bogotá- Colombia. 🇨🇴 Now in the Salt Cathedral. Then markets are cool and full of people and life, so we immersed ourselves in handicrafts and people. As this is the cooler (less warm) city in Colombia, we got warm tea with whisky in and lots of fruits 🍇🍈🍊 It’s being sold by Venezuelan 🇻🇪 refugees.

The salt cathedral is huge. It’s a salt mine with hundred long lines carefully carved into the mountains to extract the salt. When that was done the faithfull miners decided for each to raise a cross and turn it into one of the steps in Via Doloraosa, and then an entire cathedral underground. A catholic society so much that we saw Via Dolorosa for the second time already.

The Favelas have a huge blue butterfly 🦋 painted on the facades of so many houses you only see it from afar. Stunning.

Markets are where we thrive as there are lots of people. Lots of life. A chess game became my highlight as Laerke and Ella took a game. Ella won and a local couple asked Ella to play. He took it really well when Ella won again 😉

As people find the climate in Bogotá cold, the tea can be served warm with whiskey, rum 🥃 🍹 etc and lots of the fresh fruits they have everywhere. Like glüh wine and glögg – and no, it’s not cold here for a Dane.

We got enthusiastic over earrings, pearls from the Embera tribe, music, cheese 🧀 cutlery sets, chess ♟️ boards, and mango 🥭 strips with tajin and chamoy, and soup with corn 🌽, rice 🌾 🍚 , chicken and avocado 🥑

Again a day of talks and company by our astonishing host – we never run out of topics when the entry level stories are Jewish history, geopolitics, extreme travels while locating as many architecturally interesting buildings, monuments etc on the NomadMania list 😂

Looking forward to synagogue, Mormon temple, 🛕, Click Clack hotel (absolutely stay in Lancaster Hotel as this is Jack’s place), monument of heroes, architecture that has been nominated by Colombia to the UNESCO list and is on the tentative list, the University city etc etc etc 😉
