Tunisia: Sahara desert. Tatoine, where Star Wars was filmed. Berber women living under ground.
Star Wars was filmed here in the Tunesian desert where Berber families still live in the mountain – literally inside the mountains.
I loved meeting the women at home in the house. Three families lives in this house.
The house is 300 years old.
The Sahara desert changes from farming of the 100-120 MILLION olive trees grown by just 12 mio Tunisians, to rocky desert, salt desert, and the fine sand dunes.
Social welfare does not exist in the same way as in Western Europe. BUT maybe in a better way. All can get land here from government to grown olive trees and make a living from this. That also cultivates the desert. Help to start a small shop is also possible. But then all have to work.
For women scarf is voluntary. The niqab where you cover completely is not allowed. People have to show their faces. For others to see if it is men or women, and if it is terrorists with weapons. A good rule as I see it.
Helicopters patrol the desert. Neighboring Liberia and Algeria makes this necessary. Liberia especially. There are black market trade of Libyan gasoline along the road. When I traveled in Libya, there were no gasoline to be had, as it was sold on the black market.
