Papua New Guinea: highlands. Huli Tribe Bachelors.
This Huli tribe elder looked most happy, when he had the coca-cola in his hand. He welcomed us while drinking coke. Finished the can, and threw it along the side of the road.
He broke the magic of tribal life style in balance with nature efficiently.
It was authentic travel experience though and a real meeting with the present day culture.
The Huli tribe is a tribe of Wigmen m, widows and fortune tellers – it’s also a tribe where men spend years as teenagers in a bachelor school.
In the bachelor school, they are taught to be of use as grown men.
Much as in most tribes in Africa and most island states in the Pacific where men were taught skills for hunting etc and have to go through a ritual to be accepted as adults, and thus being allowed ti form a family.
To keep the young men from doing anything stupid, including getting women pregnant before they can provide for themselves and take responsibility, they have told the young men, that the hair only grows properly, if they are not together with women, while they are at the bachelors school.
Smart.
They spend an amount of time in the waterfall with the high humidity and the elder to perfect the oval mushroom shaped hair, that are later made into the wigs.
